Occupational Therapy: Celebrate the Helpers

April is Occupational Therapy Month, and there’s no better time to celebrate the incredible Occupational Therapists (OTs) who help people reclaim their lives after brain injuries, strokes, and surgery.

These everyday heroes do more than guide recovery – they help people live again. From relearning how to hold a pen to making a safe return to work, occupational therapists restore independence, function, and confidence, one small victory at a time.

Why Occupational Therapists Matter (Now More Than Ever)

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 133,000 occupational therapists in the U.S. today, and the field is projected to grow by 12% by 2032. That’s faster than average for all professions! As a neurosurgeon, I’m stoked about that outlook. I’ve seen firsthand how essential OTs are. Surgery may repair the body, but OTs help rebuild the life behind it.

Patients often struggle with memory, speech, coordination, or even simple tasks such as eating or dressing after suffering a brain injury or illness. This is where OTs come in. They help:

  • Rebuild fine motor skills (like for writing or typing)

  • Strengthen focus and memory

  • Modify spaces to improve safety

  • Encourage real-life confidence (yes, even making a piece of toast counts!)

Their work is practical and deeply personal. OTs walk alongside patients through some of their toughest days and celebrate the wins, no matter how small.

Know an OT? Tell Them They Rock.

If an occupational therapist has helped you or someone you love in their journey to recovery, here are easy ways to say thanks:

  • Send a heartfelt, handwritten thank-you note
  • Treat them to their favorite coffee or snack
  • Send a small, meaningful gift – like a Ladyspinedoc digital gift card

To All Occupational Therapists Out There...

Thank you for helping brains heal, bodies adapt, and people thrive. Your work changes lives – quietly, skillfully, and with so much heart.

We see you. We celebrate you. And we’re cheering you on.
