Why Women in Medicine Are Stronger Together
Celebrating National Women Physicians Day
Every year on February 3, National Women Physicians Day honors the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1849. Her achievement opened doors that had long been closed to women, and while medicine has evolved significantly since then, the need for women to support women in this field remains just as important.
National Women Physicians Day is a time to recognize the achievements of women physicians, acknowledge ongoing challenges in medicine, and celebrate the resilience, expertise, and leadership women bring to healthcare.
The History Behind National Women Physicians Day
Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York in 1849 despite intense societal resistance to women pursuing medicine. Her perseverance paved the way for generations of women physicians, surgeons, scientists, and healthcare leaders.
Today, women make up a growing portion of the medical workforce, yet the path remains complex. Gender pay gaps persist, leadership roles remain disproportionately male, and women often face higher expectations in training, practice, and patient care. This history is why National Women Physicians Day is about not only reflection, but also continued progress.
Why Women in Medicine Are Stronger Together
Medicine has never advanced in isolation. It moves forward through collaboration, mentorship, shared knowledge, and shared resilience. Women in medicine are stronger together because the work is demanding, emotionally complex, and deeply human.
Being stronger together means:
-
Supporting colleagues through long days and difficult cases
-
Mentoring the next generation of women in medical fields
-
Advocating for equity, representation, and fair treatment in medicine
-
Creating space for women to lead without needing to conform
Bottom line, community is an essential part of the medical profession for women.
The Women in Medicine® Stronger Together Collection
The Women in Medicine® Stronger Together Collection was created in collaboration with the Women In Medicine® organization to reflect exactly that sense of unity. This launch is about visibility, pride, and honoring the collective strength of women across every specialty, training level, and role in healthcare.
A portion of the proceeds from the Stronger Together collection will be donated to the Women in Medicine® non-profit organization.
Wearing “Stronger Together” is not about making a statement for others. It is about recognizing yourself as part of a larger community that shows up every day to care for patients, teach students, lead teams, and change medicine from the inside out.

Honoring Women Physicians Today and Every Day
National Women Physicians Day is a moment to reflect on how far women in medicine have come, but also to look around at the women standing beside us right now. The ones mentoring, teaching, healing, advocating, and leading with purpose.
We are here because of the women who came before us. We move forward because we choose to support one another.
Women in medicine are stronger together. And that is always worth celebrating.
